A discussion on where we are and where we are heading in modeling software for the building industries.

NYDesigns of the City University of New York invites you to join a discussion informed by the perspectives of technology, architecture, engineering and industry on the future of higher efficiency modeling in building construction and maintenance. This talk is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

In the past decade, a range of energy modeling software has been released in the market from big and small players alike. Each subsequent year yields better productions for the professionals: more advanced functionalities; greater fidelity and accuracy in systems simulation; increased integration with other applications; and better-designed user experience, among others. As improvements are made to the software, the modeling process will become even quicker, more accurate, and more cost effective.

Clear downsides shadow these advancements. User licenses cost as much as ever and the complexity of the data may not find maximum utility in every user. General accuracy of modeling is regularly questioned and its unreliability pinned on over-complexity.

Are developments, however, pointing towards an open source future? How can applications address complexity without sacrificing user adapativeness and data accuracy? How should energy modeling be used in concert with other factors to inform design and building recommendations?
